Aron Canet and Hafizh Syahrin work at the Qatar test with their eyes on next week’s race

The Aspar Team has started to lay the foundations for the first race of the season with a test day at the Losail Circuit at Qatar, where its two Moto2 riders have focused on working on the set-up of their Speed Up bikes. Aron Canet and Hafizh Syarin have finished within a second of the best time of the day, the one achieved by another Speed Up rider, Jorge Navarro. Canet has ended the day as the eleventh fastest rider, after achieving a lap time of 1:59.807 in the best of the 57 laps he has completed to the Qatari track. The Valencian will focus tomorrow especially on improving the feelings with the front tyre, which in the last session of the day have prevented him from finishing the day upward.

His teammate Syahrin has closed the first day of testing in Qatar with the seventeenth best time after having reduced the distance with the leaders to nine tenths. The Malaysian has not been able to break the 2:00 barrier since, in the last run, when he had put a new tyre to get it, he has suffered a small crash in turn six. Syahrin will try again tomorrow, on the second of the last three days of the pre-season 2020 tests.

11th Aron Canet 1: 59.807 (+0.639, 57 laps): “It was a positive first day, because we have been able to work a lot on the set-up of the bike, although we still have room for improvement. We have a good rhythm, but we are still behind with respect to the first rider. We have to continue along the same lines, seeking to improve the sensations with the front tyre, since when the temperature has dropped, those good feelings have disappeared.”

17th Hafizh Syahrin 2: 00.141 (+0.973, 48 laps): “The first day was really good, I had a really strong pace, but it’s a shame because in the last run I put a new tyre to get a 1:59 but I had a small crash. I felt confident with my bike and with the used tyre we did 2:00 low. Then, it was time to try to arrive to 1:59. In the first sector I was fast, but when I arrived to turn 6 I had a small crash because of the weather. It was 10 degrees lower than at midday, this can be a problem for the race. We will see tomorrow. I believe we can arrive to 1:59. Today was the first day and I am happy, just less than one second off the best time. Tomorrow we can be better and faster, for sure.”
